Design an Angel in a Forest of Autumn..Customized with amazing Shine Effects

In this photo manipulation tutorial I will walk you through the steps of creating an autumn wallpaper in Photoshop using some stock photos and brushes.

Resources

Before we begin, take a moment to download these resources. I want to thank the artists who created these stock images and brushes for their effort. Please respect their work and make sure you read the stock rules of each item before using them in your projects.

Final Result

Step 1

Create a new document in Photoshop (Ctrl/Cmd + N). My document is 950px wide and 700px high. Download this forest image, open it in Photoshop and move it into your first document using the Move Tool (V). Name this layer “forest”. Then go to Edit > Free Transform (Ctrl/Cmd + T), hold down the Shift key and change the size of this image.

Step 2

Download these three girl photos and open the first one in Photoshop. Use the Pen Tool (P) to separate the girl from the background. Then move the girl into your first document using the Move Tool (V). Name this layer “girl” and use Free Transform (Ctrl/Cmd + T) to change its size.
Add a mask to this layer (Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal All), select a soft black brush (B) with the opacity 30% and use it to erase the bottom area of the girl’s dress.

Step 3

Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Brightness/Contrast, tick the “Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask” option and use the settings from the following image. Select the mask of this adjustment layer and use the Paint Bucket Tool (G) to fill it with black. Then select a big white soft brush and use it to paint over the bottom area of the girl’s dress. This will make the adjustment layer visible only in that area.

Step 4

Download this image and open it in Photoshop. Use the Pen Tool (P) to separate the big rock from the background. Then move the rock into your first document using the Move Tool (V). Name this layer “rock” and use Free Transform (Ctrl/Cmd + T) to change its size and rotate it.
Put this layer underneath the “girl” layer. Then double-click on it and use the settings from the following image for Drop Shadow.

Step 5

Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Brightness/Contrast, tick the “Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask” option and use the settings from the following image. Then select a big soft black brush (B) and paint with it over the top area of the rock.

Step 6

Create a new group and name it “rays”. Create a new layer inside this group (Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + N). Then select a white hard brush (B) and paint some circles with different sizes. Right-click on this layer and select Convert to Smart Object. Then go to Filter > Blur > Radial Blur and use the settings from the following image.

Step 7

Repeat the previous step a couple of times to create more rays. Then move the “rays” group underneath the “rock” layer.

Step 8

Download these feather brushes and install them in Photoshop. Create a new group and name it “feathers”. Create a new layer inside this group, set the foreground color to white, select one of the brushes you installed and use it to create a feather. You can use Free Transform (Ctrl/Cmd + T) to change the size and rotate this layer. Continue to create more feathers and put each one in a new layer. Set the opacity of these layers to 80-100%.

Step 9

Select the Brush Tool (B), right-click on your image and select a soft brush with the diameter 9px. Then open the Brushes panel (F5) and use the settings from the following image to create a new brush. To save you brush, click on the “Create new brush” button from the bottom of this panel.
Create a new group, name it “sparks” and set its blend mode to Color Dodge. Create a new layer inside this group and name it “sparks” as well. Set the foreground color to white, select the brush you created and use it to create some sparks around the girl.

Step 10

Select the brush you created at the previous step and set it’s diameter to 50px. Create a new layer, set the foreground color to #fdfae3 and use the brush to create some big sparks at the top of your image. Name this layer “rays”, right-click on it and select Convert to Smart Object. Then go to Filter > Blur > Radial Blur and use the settings from the image below. You can apply this filter twice.

Step 11

Create a new group and name it “darkness”. Then select a linear-black-to-transparent gradient (G) and create three gradients – one at the bottom of your image, one in the right hand side and another one in the left hand side. Set the blend mode of this layer to Overlay 35%.

Step 12

Create a new group and name it “colors”. Create a new layer inside this group. Then select a big soft brush (B) and create a soft circle on your image using a light color. Add a few more colors to your image, each one in a new layer. Then set the blend mode of the “colors” group to Overlay 35%.

Step 13

Select the Type Tool (T) and write the word “Autumn” at the top of your image using the color #fef1cc and a script font (such as P22 Corinthia). Double-click on the text layer to open the Layer Style window and use the settings from the image below. For Drop Shadow I used the color #614b2c and for Stroke I used #cbab6b.

Step 14

Create a new layer above all the other ones. Hit the D key on your keyboard to reset the foreground color to black and the background color to white. Then go to Filter > Render > Clouds. Name this layer “clouds” and set its blend mode to Soft Light 80%.

Step 15

Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Gradient Map and use the settings from the following image. To create the gradient I used the colors #592a0a and #f4d81c. Set the blend mode of this layer to Soft Light 50%.

Step 16

Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Channel Mixer and use the settings from the following image.
