First, mobile phones started to replace the landlines, then the camera, then the laptop and now the iPhone is even attempting to replace the paintbrush!
While I can’t imagine a time when the artist will reach for his mobile rather than his palette to work, it’s already perfectly possible to produce a veritable masterpiece using nothing more than aniPhone and a carefully selected app, such as Brushes or Sketch Mobile. Take a look at the 30 carefully selected pieces below for an insight into the artistic possibilities of the mobile age.
1. Speed Limit
Stef Kardos is an art director at Disney with a penchant for iPhone finger-painting. This midnight blue number is quite the visual treat.
2. iPhone Artwork
This otherworldly creature was drawn using the latest updates to the app, Inspire, such as dry brush mode which is great for adding texture.
3. Collage Girl (David Scott Leibowitz)
This abstract masterpiece was made on an iPhone from photos taken on an iPhone.
4. New Yorker (Jorge Colombo)
Few iPhone artists have risen to the dizzy heights of fame reached by Jorge Colombo. His work graced the front cover of the New Yorker in May last year.
5. iPhone Painting (Magnus Blank)
Magnus Blank’s scribbled yet colorful iPhone paintings are heavily reminiscent of Phil Frost’s work.

11. SF Bay Bridge (Colleen Proppe)
Abstract but striking, the colors in this nocturnal scene perfectly portray the atmosphere of the Bay Bridge at night.
12. Self Portrait (Robert Dawson)
Portraits are among the hardest things to paint on the iPhone. This one has come out really well, with great attention to detail in the skin tones.
13. Happy (Rubens LP)
Painted using Sketchbook Mobile, this sketchy portrait is a visual feast.
14. Katie (Collide 007)
Despite the colours being a little washed out, the look in the subject’s eye and shading in the hair make this portrait more than worthy of inclusion in this list.
15. iPhone Painting (Henrie Tsai)
Quite unlike the other artworks in the list, this one has more of a sketchy style, but shows the wide range of outcomes made possible with theiPhone’s painting apps.
16. What do you Call… (Dionne Hartnett)
A number of processes were required to create this image. The original photo was taken on a Canon before being snapped with the iPhone camera and finally edited on the phone.
17. Painting of Graduation (Anselm23)
What better way to cut through the tedium of a graduation ceremony that to whip out your iPhone and start painting what you see before you? That’s exactly what Anselm23 did!
18. Fulton Street Workers Study (Stephen L Harlow)
This image is an amalgamation of 52 iPhone photos stitched together and cut into a 100-piece grid.
19. Hidden in the Jungle (Mexgolem)
Hidden in the jungle you might just find a scary, ginger dinosaur made with Artist Touch.
20. Japanese Girl (Starr Shaw)
Thanks to Sketchbook Mobile, Starr Shaw has managed to produce this terrific portrait full of vivid colours.
21. Sun Flower (Architecturegeek)
This rather naïve painting could brighten up anyone’s day.
22. Day 147 of 365 (Michael Sutton)
Uploaded using Flickit Pro, this photo had to undergo several stages of iPhone editing to produce an image of this quality.
23. Robot (Anton Olsen)
Almost Keith Haring-like in its simplicity, this Brushes creation is a straightforward gem.
24. Hold My Other A (Benjamin Rabe)
I can only guess as to what the “Other A” is, but I love pencil-like quality of this piece.
25. Saira (Rubens LP)
I know we’ve already covered Rubens LP above, but I just had to draw your attention to this perfectly sketched bird. The colours are stunning.
26. Fish Painting (Denise Chan)
Another naïve piece – this example goes to show that you don’t have to be the world’s greatest painter to produce something which looks really cool.
27. Monster! (Chris Salt)
Hand drawn in Brushes, this kind of colourful illustration is highly commercial these days.
28. My Third Attempt (J L T)
For a third attempt, this iPhone portrait is a great success.
29. Shavar Ross Painting (Shavar Ross)
This iPhone creation is so painting-like and the brush strokes so realistic, you could be forgiven for thinking that it’s the real thing.
30. Godzilla!! (Mexgolem)
You’ve got to love this comic-book illustration made with Sketchbook Mobile and TouchUP. It’s got a real vintage quality.
