Any visual element which repeats itself multiple times comprises a pattern. We’ve written about this recently, and if you look around, you’ll find that patterns are everywhere. In the clouds, the desert sand, in leaves, in flower petals, in your footprints, in the cracked dry earth—everywhere. Today we have collected a series of beautiful natural pattern examples, to inspire you to get outside and take a look!

Tips and Resources
Although the key to this type of photography is practice, there are a few things to bear in mind before you go out and start shooting. For everything you need to know, take a look at our 10 Step Guide to Understanding and Utilising Pattern. The natural world offers an endless range of possible patterns to find and make the most of. Simple rock formations, lines of trees or veins in a leaf are all easy to find and capture. Make sure you search on both a small and large scale. Often the detail in natural objects can contain fascinating patterns, but similarly, something like a large sandstone formation with many layers and tones of sediment will be great subject material.
You should also be sure to look out for both regular and irregular patterns, as either can make for a great subject:
- Regular Patterns – Some of the most rewarding patterns to shoot consist of shapes, lines or colours that repeat in a strict formation. It is the regularity of the arrangement of the objects that give the photo strength.
- Irregular Patterns – Primarily found in the natural world, patterns can show themselves in irregular formations and, in direct contrast to regular formations, the photographer may have to create a pattern from a selection of objects themselves.
