Abstracted Art Effect with Retro Touch and Coloured Templates

In this photoshop tutorial we will learn how to create amazing abstract art picture with masks. Mainly we will work with images adjustments, brushes. You will see, that this tutorial is very simple, but at the end, you will get really cool abstract picture. Final Image Preview

Necessary details:

I use this photo , some elements and this beautiful ornate from here. Also I use this brushes
brush1, brush2 and this texture for background.

Step 1

Open photo and use pen tool (P) to select mask.

Close the work path and go to Paths tab. You’ll see newly created work path. Ctrl-click on the work path layer to load selection. Select > Inverse to select the area outside the subject. Press Delete. Or you can right click over closed work path and choose “make selection” from menu like here:

Step 2

Copy layer with mask one more time.

Make active layer "mask1" and go to Image -> Adjustments ->Treshold level 163

In layer "mask2" set level 90 like on image below.

Return to Layer "mask1" and with Eraser tool remove whole rope.

Now merge layers: mask1 and mask2 (Ctrl+E)

We get Mask on separate layer without background.

Step 3

Open new document width 1480, height 2093 pixels, resolution 300 pixels/inch.
Add there texture and mask. Copy layer with mask two times and using Free Transform (Ctrl+T) and flip horizontal, locate mask like in image below.

Now our layer palette looks like this:

Step 4

Make active layer "mask middle" an go to: Adjustments -> Hue/Saturation (Ctrl+U)

Now do same with layer “mask bottom”, only select following parameters

Our image now looks like this:

Step 5

Take Brush tool (B). We will use brush 1. Make new layer above layer ”bg”. Select color # c01212 and brush like in image below.

Next: Edit ->Transform -> Warp, and choose Custom. Little bit curve inwards right side up.

Put each paint spot on separate layer. For white (#ffffff) take brush like in image below.

For green (#0b8c8b) paint spot take same brush that you use for red paint spot (same form and size).
Now our layers palette looks like this:

Step 6

Now we will use ornate. Please each ornament to separate layer. Use Free Transform(Ctri+T) ,flip horizontal and vertical. You must have something like this:

Now we will add little bit color to our ornaments. For lower ornaments use Image -> Adjustments -> Hue/ Saturatin parameters like here:

Now its looks pretty nice. Now add one more ornament above “mask middle” and apply for that ornament Hue/Saturatin like on image below:

Step 7

Now we will add some elements, that will impart to our image more dynamics. Dont forget that elements must be placed on separated layers. Layers place before and after ornaments.

Step 8

Now we will add splashes. Take brush2, color #c5c8c8, size and form of the brush you can see on screenshoot. Place splashes to separated layers.

Step 9

Create new layer above “bg” and add radial gradient. Gradient color: #b0eef3


Almost done!

Step 10

In last step, we will add text to this nice image (T), font: Arial Black. Layer with text place above all layers. To this layer we will add vector mask. You can find Vector mask in the bottom of layers palette.

Active Vector mask, take brush and few times sweep to text. Set Opacity to 40%.
