Alice in The Wonderland Photoshop Concept Designing in PS with Diff.Objects

In this Photoshop tutorial we will show you how to create fantasy scene from one of the interesting and eccentric fairytale - Alice in Wonderland. We will use lots of images. As you can see from Tutorial final image preview, we will create door to Wonderland, where Alice invites you. Also we will create popular Cheshire cat and add some fairytale elements, like fairy. In this tutorial we mostly will use images adjustments tools, transform tool. Also we will use some brushes. I hope you will enjoy this Photoshop tutorial. If you are lazy to create this effect, you can simply download Psd file of this tutorial and replace girls face with yours.

Final Image Preview

Preparing

We’ll use many images, some brushes: Winter, Splatters and Watercolor. We need to prepare our images, so let’s do it!
Go to Flickr and take this girl image. We will use it in our fairytale. Go to the Images>Adjustments>Curves or (Ctrl + M)

Result:

So we add to our image more light and contrast. Now we need to delete background.
Go to the Filter>Extract or (Alt+Ctrl + X)

It must looks like this:

Now we will make our girl eyes magic green. Select eye by Elliptical Marquee Tool. Go to Images>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation

Name this file Alice, save and close.
The next open this file. Delete background; erase the mushroom by soft brash, as shown below:

Then apply Hue/Saturation, as shown below:

Call this file Mushroom and don’t forget to save!
Now open the file with ballerina. Delete background, and then select the image (press Ctrl+ Click on icon in the pallet of layers) go to Select>Modify>Contract, contract by 2 pixels. Inverse selection (Shift+Ctrl +I) and press Delete.

Now we need to blur our image. Go to Filter>Blur> Gaussian Blur:

Open file with butterfly, delete background and place wings, as shown below:

Name file Elf, merge layers (Ctrl + E), save and close.
Open file with Cat, delete background and make the contour of his clever face blur, using Erase Tool.

It must be look like this:

Make selection as shown below and go to Layer>New >New layer via Cut or (Shift+Ctrl+J). Call the file Jaw t, and make it invisible.

Select visible jaw, using Lasso Tool. Make new layer via cut (Shift+ Ctrl+J).

Now open file with smile. Select smile as shown below, drag to the file with Cat.

Place and transform as on the screenshot:

The pallet of layers must look like here:

Now we using Warp (Edit>Transform>Warp) transform the jaw over the smile:

Mask parts marked on the screenshot below, using Clone Stamp. The way to use this tool is really simple. First, select the brush type (we’ll use soft brush, size about 200 px) choose the area you want to duplicate. Next press and hold only the Option key, and then click one time over the area that we call the Clone Source. Finally, just paint anywhere you want it.

Now we need to use Burn Tool (O):

Burn the area as shown on the image below:

After that make a new layer over layer Cat, call it Splatters. I used Splatters brushes. Color of brushes is black (#000000). Load selection to layer Splatters (Ctrl +Click over icon on the pallet of layers), then select layer Cat and make new layer via cut (Ctrl+ Shift + J) Place this new layer over layer Cat, delete layer Splatters. Call it Elements and transform as shown below. I used free transform (Ctrl +T) you may try to use Warp, the result will be interesting.

At last select all layers and group into new smart object (Layer> Smart objects> Group into New Smart Object). Save layer Cat and close.

Step 1

Open new document: A3 resolution 300pix. Name it: Wonderland. Take this texture and drag to new document. Copy layer, flip vertical and free transform.

Merge layers (Ctrl+E) and name it: Texture. I use Clone Stamp (S) to make the Texture more homogeneous. I marked were to apply Clone Stamp on the image below:

Make new layer over the Texture and fill it with #072c37 color and change blending mode to overlay. Go to texture layer and change opacity of layer to 12%.

Step 2

Now it’s time to build the door to another world! Make new layer over Bg and fill it #08faca color.

The next, on new layer over, make selection by rectangular marquee, fill it with black #000000 color.Transform as shown.

Make new layer over. Make rectangular marquee; fill with #f6f618 color, and use free transform as shown below:

Make one more rectangular on new layer, fill it with #f9f9e8 color. Merge these three layers and name the layer Door. It must be look like this:

Step 3

Drag Alice over the Window, like shown:

Step 4

Take telephone and flower, and drag them like here:

Step 5

Add Dodo and place like on the image below:

Go to Image>Adjustments>Desaturate.

Copy layer Dodo, change blending mode to Screen, opacity 75%.

Merge these two layers. Then go to Blur>Gaussian Blur.

Step 6

Copy layer Dodo and go to Filter>Sketch>Graphic Pen:


Name this layer: Dodo2, change blending mode to Soft light and place like here:

Step 7

Now select Flower and go to Images>Adjustments>Curves:

Then go to Filter >Blur > Gaussian Blur:

Copy layer Flower, transform and place as shown:

Call the layer Flower Blue, make it blue with help of Hue/Saturation:

Now copy Flower Blue and go to Images>Adjustments>Desaturate or (Shift + Ctrl +U). Transform, flip horizontal and erase like sown on the screenshot below. I used soft brush size 250 pix; opacity 85%.

Step 8

Open file Mushroom and drag it to Wonderland. Copy layer mushroom two times, transform and place as shown below. I called files Mush White, Mush Blue and Mush. Add caterpillar, transform and place as shown:

Go to layer Mush White (I marked it on the screenshot below), desaturate it (Shift+ Ctrl +U), Then go to Images>Adjustments>Brightness/Contrast:

Go to layer Mush Blue and apply Hue/Saturation:

Step 9

Return to layer Caterpillar, make it blue with help of Hue/Saturation:

Apply Gaussian Blur:

Make new layer before Caterpillar, make elliptical marquee and fill it with #fbe65c.

Apply Gaussian Blur:

Now go to the layer Caterpillar and change Brightness/Contrast:

At last I drag layer with shadow over Caterpillar, change blending mode to Saturation.

Step 10

Open file Elf. Drag it to Wonderland. Place them as shown:

And now we need to change colors. For Blue Elf we apply Hue/saturation:

And Image > Adjustments>Color Balance (Ctrl + B):

For Yellow Elf apply Hue/Saturation (Ctrl + U) and Image > Adjustments>Brightness/Contrast.

Step 11

Add Cat and place it as shown below:

Make new a layer over Cat, call it Shine. Apply Diamond Shine white (#ffffff) gradient:


Make one more layer over Cat, call it Cat’s Light and add radial gradients over his eyes. Color of gradient is #03f6ae, style as shown here:

Change Blending Mode to Overlay. The new layers must place like shown here:

Step 12

Now we need Winter brushes. Make a new layer over Background. Change brush color to #d7ecf1 And paint some winter trees like shown below. The size of brushes I changed rather big: about 1800 pix. Then I used Eraser:

And I erased selected part as shown on the screenshot below:

Add Winter Brushes behind Cat. Experiment with angle of brushes and roundness. Place every new element of tree on the separate layer.


Use Free Transform, Flip Vertical and Horizontal:

It will looks like here or even better!

Step 13

Add some details to our picture. Make a new layer over layer Door, call this layer Keyhole Go to the Custom Shape Tool and change shapes what I marked on the screenshot:

Load every shape separately and fill it with white (#ffffff). It must looks like here:

Then apply Free Transform:

Now we need a key:

Make layer Key over Keyhole. For Key I used this color #f1d809. Place our key as shown below:

Make selection and delete selected part.

Step 14

Now make selection like on the screenshot below:

Make a new layer over Keyhole; it will be a shadow in the keyhole. Fill it with #c09502 color. Deselect, go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur, radius 1,5 px. Load the selection of Keyhole (Ctrl + Click over layer icon on the pallet of layers), inverse selection (Shift +Ctrl +I) go to the layer with keyhole shadow and press Delete.
Copy layer Key place it behind layer Key, transform it as shown on the screenshot:

Call the layer Key Shadow, load the selection and fill it with #06a8f8 color:


Transform like shown. Apply Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur:

Transform Key Shadow using Warp (Edit>Transform>Warp).

Step 15

Make a new layer over Trees and make radial gradient, color #f293f7.


At last I add some splatters. I used Watercolor brushes color of brushes #ffffff, change blending mode to Soft Light. In pallet of layers it mast look like this:

It almost over. I decided to make Alice’s lips more brightly. I made a new layer over Alice and paint over her lips using soft brush, about 150 pix; hardness 0%; color #272f9.Change Blending Mode to Overlay.
Thats it. We create scene from fairytale about Alice in Wonderland. I hope you enjoy this tutorials and learn some new photoshop techniques.
